Blast Off

Funny story, this is the third costume I’ve ever made for my son. A few years ago he always wanted me to purchase his costume from the store. Every year I would ask and he would always turn up his nose…….until…..at age 5, he entered the costume contest dressed up as a police man with muscles. The costume was store bought of course. When they started calling all the winners, 1st place…2nd place…3rd place…. they never called my son. While standing on stage, he kept looking at us through the crowd of people hoping to catch our attention. I took a quick glance at him, but I couldn’t stare. I just looked at my husband while we talked about how sad my son looked. It was the most pitiful sight. LOL! My friends and I were like, don’t look at Tyler (my son) because his eyes were screaming out for help. When all the winners were called, my son left the stage. He looked at me with his sad eyes and said he didn’t win. This might be rude, but on the inside I was dying laughing. I mean…. I KNEW HE WOULD NOT WIN! LOL! So I comforted him the best way I could and whispered in his ear, “If you allow me to make your costume next year, I will make sure you win!“ And guess what guys, my son never went back to a store bought costume again. LOLOLOLOL!!!!! I’ve made 3 costumes since he was 5 and he has won first place ever since. If you scroll through my instagram, you’ll see his past costumes.

Any who…lets talk about this year. So, let me just say, I am lucky enough that my children allow me to choose their costumes. They honestly do not care, because at this point they trust my judgement and want to win. I saw this spaceman blasting into space costume on Pinterest and asked my husband to recreate it. Yep! My husband made the costume. The only part that I contributed to the costume was the lining for the fire skirt since my husband can’t sew.

My husband worked on this costume every night when he came home from work. If we are being honest, its actually a pretty easy costume to make. We did not follow any tutorial to recreate it. We just used a pinterest photo as inspiration to guide us.

Here are some helpful notes that will help you recreate this costume:

  1. Space backpack: Gather those amazon boxes you’ve been saving up. Glue them together, splash some paint on them and print out some space images from Google. Attach some fabric for the straps and tada! you have a backpack

  2. Fire: This was actually an elastic skirt that I sewed up. My husband cut out flames with the leftover fleece we used on the hei her costume and hot-glued them to the skirt.

  3. Spacesuit: We were lucky enough to find this at our local thrift store. To amp it up, I added buttons and cords so that it didn’t look so flat and cheap.

  4. Helmet: We found this for $5 at our local Party City. The store was closing so we got a deal.

The astronaut costume WON!!! So my son placed 1st in his age group 5-8 yrs old. This costume was such a fun one for people to see. So many people stopped him while he was walking to take photos and to figure out how it all worked. We definitely confused so many people. LOL! That’s the fun part about Halloween; bringing so much joy and happiness to everyone through your craft. People really do enjoy it!

Funny story, my mom argued with me for over 15 minutes about where my son’s feet were. I’m like, “MOM!!! How do you not understand that this was an optical illusion?”! LOL! She was seriously confused. I just gave up on the argument and told her she was right. A robot was under the flames and was pushing my son around. (not really, but lets go with that for the sake of my headache. LOLOLOL!!!!) Good Grief!
