Design Your Own Fabric
So, I took a class last Summer where I learned how to design my own fabric by painting it. I found it kinda hard and didn’t enjoy it because I’m not great at drawing. I feel like when you are painting on fabric without any guide, you only have one chance to get it right. I saw this screen printing set and a lightbulb went off in my head. I was instantly inspired to try my hand at designing my own fabric again.
Now, as I was practicing this technique, I realized that you didn’t need the above kits necessarily, but they are nice to have. You will however, need ALL of their fabric paint colors because why not?! They are really inexpensive and you can’t design fabric without all the colors! LOL! These paints are easy to use. One tip I will share is, using an iron after you’ve finished painting to set the paint. I used a waxed paper barrier in between my iron and fabric.
MATERIALS:
Silhouette Fabric Ink
Silhouette Cameo 4
Stencil Vinyl
Fabric (Cotton preferably)
HERE’S HOW:
Create your design using the Silhouette Studio. My design was pretty simple. I designed oranges and orange blossoms. You can use the shapes in the studio to help get you started on your design. Once you’ve created your design, you just simply cut it out.
2. Once your vinyl is cut, weed out the center of your design.
3. Starting at the corner, stick your vinyl onto your fabric. And now we can paint! Use a sponge and a painting pallets or surface and paint your fabric. I found that I only needed one coat. Also, I wouldn’t recommend squeezing the paint onto the fabric. Use a paint surface. Allow to dry for about an hour before removing. Once it’s dry, remove the vinyl and position it to another area on your fabric.
4. Once you’ve finished painting your fabric, Take it to the iron and set the paint in place. Place wax paper onto of the painted area and iron on top. That’s it!
