Tips & Tricks: Sewing Tools
As a full time creator, I am all about ease of use, comfort, and efficiency when it comes to the tools I use. I create every single day. Using the right tools to complete each task is so important to me. I wanted to share some of my favorite tools and few tips and tricks on how to use them to their full potential.
You can find all of these tools and more at your local Joann Stores. If you want to shop online, Ive also included a link to make shopping easier for you. Tools and Best of Use
I like the thought of a tool that has one purpose and it doing the best job at it. The Ultra Sharp Thread Snips are perfection. They are specifically made to snip the threads from your fabric or from your machine when completing a seam. The cut is smooth like butter. The shape of the scissors makes it really efficient to use. I like to leave these next to my sewing machine and quickly snip away any threads hanging from my fabric.
One trick that I do like doing is a final snip at the end of a group of sewing tasks such as, all of my button holes and buttons. Snipping threads as I go along would waste an extreme amount of time. I like to wait until all of it is finished and go back and snip all of the loose threads. Splitting the tasks up like this makes the process go so much smoother and faster. I’m all about time management and making I use the most of my time as best I can.
If you’ve been following me for a long time now, you know that my #1 favorite way to cut fabric is with a rotary cutter. The Ergo Control Rotary Cutter is a really great one! The design of this rotary cutter is well thought out. The designers thought about how the tool is handled so it’s really comfortable to hold. I like the safety lock on it which protects me from myself (I can be clumsy sometimes).
I have found that a rotary cutter is the best way to cut fabric because in comparison to scissors, the cut is next to perfect. There is no need to pick up the fabric and adjust. The cut is smooth without any distorted edge. The problems that I listed were things I deal with when I cut with scissors. I have no issues when I use a rotary cutter. Also, the speed that I’m able to cut in comparison to a pair of scissors is double the time. Like I said so many times before, efficiency is so important in my line of work. If you don’t use the Ergo Control Rotary Cutter to cut your fabric, I highly, highly recommend it.
Although I highly recommend that you use a rotary cutter for your fabric cuts, there are some fabrics that a rotary cutter wouldn’t be recommended; Fabrics that are heavier duty, thick, or have a difficult-to-cut texture. For this, you would need to use scissors. Fiskars has great options depending on the thickness or type of fabric you are cutting. One of my favorite pairs of scissors that I own are the Fiskars RazorEdge Easy Action 9'' Fabric Shears. There are two features to these pair of scissors that I cannot live without. Yes, it’s that good! The first feature is spring-action. I don’t have any joint issues but if you do, the spring-action in these scissors will be a relief for you. For me, the spring-action makes it so much easier to cut. It requires half the pressure from my hands to cut fabric. The less work I have to do, the better! The scissors force themselves open with the spring. I simply have to close them as I cut. How great is that! My second favorite feature in these scissors is the shape. Oh my goodness! How incredible is that?! The design of the handle helps keep fabric flat on the table while you cut. As I mentioned earlier, One of the problems I had while cutting fabric with scissors is that it doesn’t lay flat and requires you to adjust as you are cutting. The Fiskars RazorEdge Easy Action 9'' Fabric Shears eliminates that issue and provides for a smooth cut.
