Embrace Your Inner Flamingo

I really think that flamingo’s are epitome of Summer! Am I right?! I saw this fabric at my local JOANN store and thought that this would make a super cute button-up for a dad, but then I asked myself, how could I take the typical Summer uniforms for dad’s and turn it into something more stylish. Dad vacation shirt, but make it fashion dahling! LOL! One of my most favorite things about this top, is the button detail. The pop of black buttons gives it a polka dot look which is very playful and fun.

This is such a fun top to wear! It’s so perfect for family vacations! I paired my top with black shorts I purchased from JCrew, but I think it would look even more amazing with pink capris. What other fun ways would you wear this top?

Materials

Flamingo Fabric
Invisible Zipper
Medium Weight Interfacing

1/2 inch Black buttons

New Look 6197 Pattern

Instructions

  1. When cutting the pattern for this top, cut the pattern shorter than it would normally hit on your body; above belly button.

  2. For the peplum, cut out a circle shape peplum. For more of a flounce, I made it larger than my actual waist and then gathered the edge with yarn.

  3. Sew the top as you normally would, as per the pattern instructions, but leave one side open for zipper installation.

  4. Sew in the button-holes using a button-hole foot.

  5. Sew the buttons in place

  6. With the top buttoned up, stay stitch the bottom of your top to make sure the overlapped button area stays in place.

  7. Serge all edges to make sure that fabric edges are not going to fray.

  8. Attach peplum with open side matching

  9. Attach invisible zipper

  10. Hem arm holes and bottom edge of peplum.

*NOTE: As I’m sure you can see, I did not cut the peplum correctly for the front. When cutting, make sure that the flamingos are in the upright position. I was having so much fun creating this top that I didn’t pay attention. BUT that’s ok because I’m still going to have a lot of fun wearing it anyway.
