Cinderella Inspired Handbag
[This post is sponsored by Disney Book Group]
I started reading this book with my daughter, So This is Love by Elizabeth Lim which is a different take on the traditional Cinderella story. It’s the 9thbook in Disney’s Young Adult series called A Twisted Tale, where each book takes a Disney classic and puts a “twist” on it. So This Is Love asks: what if Cinderella never tried on the glass slipper?
I was so inspired to create something that I thought Cinderella would wear. Pulling from the idea of the glass slipper that Cinderella didn’t try on in this book, I created my own “twist“ on the glass slipper look to make a clear-as-glass handbag.
MATERIALS
Vinyl Fabric
Metallic Fabric/ Sequin Fabric
Silver Faux Leather
Heavy Weight Interfacing
Clear Round Plastic Handles
White Silky Cording
Safety Pin
Clover Clips
INSTRUCTIONS
Starting with the inner bag, cut your sequin/ metallic fabric 12” x 18”
On one side, fold over fabric at 1/4”. Stitch in place. (We will call this Side A)
Fold your fabric in half the short way (aka hamburger style) and make sure that right sides are facing. Stitch side seams together leaving 2 inches unsewn on Side A.
Next we’ll create the casing. Fold the top of the bag, 1/4”. Stitch in place.
Fold the top of the bag again at 1” and stitch in place.
Using a safety pin attached to your silky cording, pull the cording through the casing and tight a knot at the end
Your Inner Bag is complete.
Now let’s complete the outer bag. Cut your fabric according to the following measurements:
Cut a circle with a radius of 3 7/8” out of your vinyl, faux leather, and heavy weight interfacing.
Cut another piece of interfacing and faux leather at 2.5” x 5”. Cut two.
Cut your vinyl at 11 6/8” x 8”. Cut two.
Take all three circles of fabric you cut, stack them together with the leather on top, the interfacing the in the center and vinyl on the bottom. Stitch them together as close to the edge as possible.
Take your two pieces of vinyl fabrics and stitch down the side seam. Keep in the mind that the height of the bag is 8”.
Once the side seam is sewn, stitch to ensure the seam stays in place. Repeat on opposite side. It may take a bit of fudging, but it’s possible.
Using the clover clips, clip the bottom of the bag with faux leather facing up, to the side of the bag you just stitched. Stitch in place.
Once the bottom of the bag is sewn to the sides, clip the excess fabric. Cut as close to the seam as possible. You should now have a nice clean edge.
Let’s stitch the handle straps in place. Lay the faux leather on top of the interfacing. Fold .5” on each side, then fold in half the long way (aka hot dog style). Stitch in place as close to edge as possible.
Once sewn, fold the strap in half with clear handle sandwiched inside and stitch to the top center of the bag. Repeat on opposite side.
You’re finished!
This is a modern-day Disney Princess style handbag, to go along with a read that follows Cinderella as she rescues herself from her evil stepmother. So This Is Love is available in stores now, along with the rest of the A Twisted Tale series which gives new interpretations to Aladdin, Mulan, Frozen, and more!

What if Cinderella never tried on the glass slipper?
Unable to prove that she's the missing princess, and unable to bear life under Lady Tremaine any longer, Cinderella attempts a fresh start, looking for work at the palace as a seamstress. But when the Grand Duke appoints her to serve under the king's visiting sister, Cinderella becomes witness to a grand conspiracy to take the king—and the prince—out of power, as well as a longstanding prejudice against fairies, including Cinderella's own Fairy Godmother. Faced with questions of love and loyalty to the kingdom, Cinderella must find a way to stop the villains of past and present . . . before it's too late.
