Juneteenth

What is Juneteenth?

This holiday is new to most of America, but in the African American culture, this day is a celebration. Juneteenth celebrates the emancipation of enslaved people in the US. On June 19, 1865, slaves were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation.
Honestly, I think it should be a national holiday. More and more states are adopting this idea which is a huge step forward for his country.

Joanns is celebrating Juneteenth! This makes my heart happy seeing a company move forward is a positve way to celebrate the African American culture. Way to go Joanns!

In honor of this day, I thought’ it’d be fun to create one of my patterns that I created in collaboration with Creative Bug.; The Billie Dress. This dress was named after the beautiful jazz singer, Billie Holiday. I love this dress so much because it’s such quick and easy make. It’s perfect for beginners!

MODIFICATIONS:

  • Lengthened the bodice

  • Gave it a higher neckline

The perfect fabric for this dress had to be African inspired of course. I chose this super bold print called Ethnic Medallion 4 in a Silk Charmeuse. You guys this customizable section on the Joann’s website is EVERYTHING!!! Im literally obsessed. You choose the fabric you want in any design you AND you can customize the color!!! How genius is that?! When Im on the Joann’s website, majority of the time, that’s where you’ll find me….in the custom fabric section.
