Holidays Under Wraps

Furoshiki has become more and more popular in recent years and this year is the perfect time to be a little more mindful of gift wrapping! This is a centuries-old technique of using cloth to wrap and transport various, important goods and what else could be more important than showing someone how much you love and care for them?! Traditionally, the fabrics used are in different sized squares but recently, I’ve seen a lot of people wrap with whatever shape their fabric is. This is also a great scrap-buster idea for those smaller gifts you have to wrap!

The best fabrics for this are light- to mid-weight fabrics with little to no texture (the more texture you add, the tougher it could be to wrap with!) like chiffon, silks, dotted swiss, linen, cotton lawn, cotton voile, or a lightweight twill. My favorite to use is a classic quilting cotton! JOANN'S QUILTING COTTONS are perfect because of all of the fun prints they have and how clean and crisp it all looks when it’s finished! Also, make sure you check out your local Joann’s for their prepackaged 1 yard cuts so you don’t even have to worry about cutting up your favorite materials! It makes things so much easier for those last-minute gift wrapping sessions!

Another side note: THESE GIFT BOXES are also from Joann (and they’re on massive sale right now too)! They’re amazing quality that your recipients can use over and over because of how gorgeous they look.

Keep in mind that there are so many different styles that are sure to work well for whatever present you have in mind. Below are 3 simple wrapping styles that are perfect for any present you may have but make sure you look for some more great resources between other blogs and even books dedicated to this eco-friendly wrap!

Happy Holidays!

Option 1

This is a great and simple option! Take your package and fold the longer sides over the package. Bring in the shorter edges and secure the “flower” with a rubber band or even tie it together with a cute ribbon!

Option 2

Place package in center of the fabric wrap so it’s sitting on a diamond. Fold two of the corners in towards the center of the present, leaving the corners themselves pointing outward. Take the remaining corners and bring them to the center, bunching and tying the two in a bow. Take the first two corners and tuck them back into the wrapping for a nice, clean finish.

Option 3

Place package in center of fabric so it’s parallel with the fabric wrap. Fold bottom half up over present so the bottom and top edges meet. Fold one edge over the present before rolling the present over itself until you’ve reached the end of the fabric. Turn the package so it’s sitting upright. Play with the excess fabric above to how you’d like it to look and secure with a rubber band or tied ribbon!
