DIY Lamp Shade

Joann Craft Stores has a collection of state pride fabric that I am loving at this moment! The fabric is designed around all 50 states. For each state, you’ll find six differentl designs options. These fabrics are a fun way to create something and show some state pride.

Though all of the options are great, I chose the Virginia State Flower fabric. I love the soft pink and femininity of the print. With this fabric, I thought it would be a fun idea to create a lamp shade. I’ve never done this before, but I thought this was the perfect time to explore. Since, this is my first time exploring this type of project, I thought the easiest way to do this is purchase a lamp from the thrift store and revamp one.

OTHER IDEAS TO USE THE STATE FABRIC COLLECTION:

Pillow cases
Curtains
Table Runner
Sewing Machine Cover
Sewing Tools Organizer
Quilt
Iron Cover

MATERIALS:

Lamp from Thrift Store
State Cotton Fabric
Medium -Weight Interfacing
Brother Sewing Machine
Glue Gun + Glue Sticks
Seam Ripper
Olfa Rotary Cutter + Mat
Iron + Ironing Board

HERE’S WHAT I DID:

  1. I removed the fabric from the lamp shade with a seam ripper.

  2. Using a hot iron, I ironed out all of the wrinkles and creases from the fabric to make it easier to handle.

  3. I created a pattern from the lamp shade I removed. I folded the lamp shade fabric in half and placed it onto the fold of my Virginia State Flower Fabric . I traced the pattern and cut it out. I repeated this step for the interfacing as well.

  4. I placed the state fabric on top of the interfacing and stitched together around the outer perimeter.

  5. I assembled the lamp back together by hot gluing the upper and lower ring to the fabric. When I got to the end of the fabric, I folded it in about a 1/2 inch and hot glued in place.

I chose the lamp that I chose because I love the gold lamp stand. Its modern and nothing really had to be done to it but give it a good wipe down. I thought the gold stand paired well with my fabric. I especially loved the shape of the lamp shade. It seemed to be an easy shape for me to recreate. The easier, the better! No need to make things hard on myself. Am I right or am I right?!

Who wore it best!? LOL! So if you’ve been following me on instagram, you would have seen me talk about my patterns that I’m working on. I’ve been working on 4 patterns. Below is a photo of one of the patterns that will be dropping this year. The dress is made for beginners and has a really cute detail in the back. Its perfect because it’s flattering for any body shape and you can make it in almost any fabric and it’ll look great! Watch this space to see how many fabrics I end up making it in and how I style this dress for all seasons. Stay tuned for the drop!
