Designer Look for Less: Elyse Walker

Every year, I challenge myself with making a really fun coat. When choosing a design, I try to choose a style that I haven't done before. Now, don’t get me wrong, there are coat styles that I have made on repeat just because I love the coat design so much. But, for the most part, I’m always here for a good challenge so I try to venture out and do something different.
I found this coat by the designer Elyse Walker for almost $2000. What drew me to it was definitely NOT the price tag, but the multi-color trim beautifully sewn on the coat. I love it!! So of course, I was inspired to recreate it.
For the fabric, I decided to go for an outdoor canvas fabric which was perfect because the fabric was already made to be outside and it was the perfect weight for this style coat. When cutting medium weight fabrics like this with many pattern pieces, you have to ensure that each cut is perfect. I always go for my FISKARS rotary cutter. If you sew and you don’t have one of these, head on over to your local JOANN STORES and grab one (and don’t forget the extra blades).
Fiskars recently came out with newer elevated rotary cutters. I love that the handles are now more ergonomic, so it feels so much more comfortable in your hand. The blade cuts the fabric as smooth as butter. I love that my pieces are cut exactly like the sewing pattern without any excess fabric. This tool is a must have in my fashion tool kit.
