Designer Look for Less: Christopher John Rogers

Meet Allie Provost, a standout fashion influencer on Instagram. I admire her vibrant style and confidence as a fellow curvy woman who embraces color. Residing in NYC, she effortlessly flaunts bold prints and hues, showcasing her expertise in choosing flattering silhouettes for her figure.

As soon as she posted this skirt, I immiediately ran to google to search for the designer and price tag, and your girl was floored. The designer is Christopher John Rogers (my fave) and the cost is $1850. Its no longer being sold, so even if I could afford it, I would’nt be able to purchase. So what’s a girl to do?!

See…the thing about knowing to sew really well is that you can look at any garment and figure out how to make some sort of version of it. I already knew this skirt was on my list to make as soon as I saw because just from the looks of it, it’s not difficult at all. However…it is a tedious project. Give yourself a couple of days because the trim was a lot to sew. To me, it was well worth it because besides the bold neon green, the trim textures and colors were on point.

HOW I MADE IT:

Materials:

  • 5 yards Neon Green Cotton Fabric from JOANN

  • 5 yards each of various trim (Jumbo rikrak, ribbons, pompoms, or be adventurous)

  • Lucille Skirt from Ditto

  • Petticoat for volume (optional)

Notes:

  • I sewed the pattern as is until I got to the point of sewing the back seam.

  • Do not sew the back seam, just yet.

  • All the way around the skirt, I made marks for the trim. I can tell you my measurements, but it all depends on your trim layout and how the width of your trim. Simply lay your trim out, mark the bottom of each trim with a fabric marking tool. Write down the measurement for each trim and create the marks on your fabric every 6 inches all the way around.

  • Now starting with bottom trim, pin each trim in place all the way around the skirt. For each trim, pin every 3 inches.

  • Once the trim is pinned, look over it to see if it’s evenly placed and not crooked.

  • Sew it in place with matching thread.

  • Sew the back seam and hem the bottom.

STYLING:

As you can already see, the styling of this skirt can be so fun and versatile. Allie styled in a preppy way witha button-up shirt and orange sweater draped across her shoulders. I decided to go in a more playful route and pair it with a tshirt and an adorable sardines bag. Comment below and let me know how you’d style it. I would love to try different versions. Looking forward to hearing your ideas.
